How to make a good & effective website? Here is a list of 20 Dos and Don’ts for your website. Tips for Web Designers.
Ten things to do
- Keep your domain name simple and easy to remember. People should be able to type it from memory.
- Let visitors control any music. If you have a music website, let people switch the music on and off.
- Make your website secure, especially if you run an online store that takes payments.
- Make it easy to contact you. Put your contact details or a contact form on every page.
- Use search engine optimisation. Optimise your pages with the words your customers use.
- Make the website responsive, so it works on a mobile, a tablet, a laptop and a computer.
- Use colour to guide the eye to what matters and to your call to action.
- Make sure the site works with and without “www” in front of the address.
- Show testimonials from past customers, with their name and, if possible, their contact details, as it builds trust.
- Add social media buttons and a blog, which help bring fresh content and make it easy for people to share you.
Ten things not to do
- Do not use a long domain name. The longer it is, the harder it is to remember and the easier to misspell.
- Do not auto-play music. Visitors are more likely to leave.
- Do not use too many squeeze pages, which annoy visitors and make them leave.
- Do not make navigation complicated. If people cannot find what they came for, they leave.
- Do not stuff pages with keywords. There is a limit to how many you can use before the text reads badly.
- Do not forget to test how the site looks on a laptop, a tablet and a phone, and in different browsers.
- Do not put too much content on a page. Keep text short and to the point.
- Do not use Flash. It is not supported on mobile devices and set-top boxes, and it is now obsolete.
- Do not upload video testimonials directly. Put them on YouTube and embed them, which shortens loading time.
- Do not add a blog or social widget you will not update. An abandoned blog leaves a poor impression.
